Yusuf Islam, born Steven Demetre Georgiou in 1948, is a renowned British singer-songwriter and musician best known by his stage names Cat Stevens, Yusuf, and Yusuf / Cat Stevens. With a career spanning several decades, he has sold over 100 million records and his music has been streamed more than two billion times worldwide. Blending folk, rock, pop, and later Islamic influences, Yusuf rose to prominence with hits like Matthew and Son, Wild World, Father and Son, Moonshadow, Peace Train, and Morning Has Broken.
His early 1970s albums Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat achieved triple platinum status in the US, while Catch Bull at Four topped the US charts. After converting to Islam in 1977, Yusuf stepped away from pop music for nearly 30 years, dedicating himself to philanthropic and educational work. He returned to recording and performing in 2006, adopting the name Yusuf and later Yusuf / Cat Stevens, and has since released several new albums and returned to touring. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, Yusuf is also recognized for his efforts to promote peace and humanitarian causes.
