The Mamas and the Papas were a folk rock group active primarily from 1965 to 1968, with a brief reunion in 1971. Known for their rich vocal harmonies and distinctive sound, they became a defining voice of the 1960s counterculture. Formed in New York City, the group featured John Phillips, Cass Elliot, Michelle Phillips, and Denny Doherty. They released five studio albums and 17 singles, with six reaching the Billboard top 10, and sold nearly 40 million records worldwide. After their split in 1968, they reunited briefly for the album People Like Us in 1971. In 1998, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, honoring their lasting impact on popular music.
