Steppenwolf was a pioneering American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1967 by John Kay, Goldy McJohn, and Jerry Edmonton, joined later by Michael Monarch and Rushton Moreve. Renowned for their hard-edged sound, they achieved global fame with hits such as Born to Be Wild, Magic Carpet Ride, and Rock Me. Steppenwolf sold over 25 million records, released multiple gold and platinum albums, and scored numerous Billboard and Canadian chart successes. Their classic lineup lasted until 1972, after which John Kay continued to lead various incarnations of the band as John Kay and Steppenwolf until 2018. The band's legacy was further recognized when Born to Be Wild was honored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in its singles category.
