Roberta Flack was an American singer and pianist celebrated for her soulful, genre-crossing ballads that shaped the sound of R and B, jazz, folk, and pop from the 1970s onward. Best known for the classic hits The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, Killing Me Softly with His Song, and Feel Like Makin' Love, she became the first artist to win consecutive Grammy Awards for Record of the Year. Flack was also known for her acclaimed duets with Donny Hathaway, including Where Is the Love and The Closer I Get to You, and later enjoyed further success collaborating with artists like Peabo Bryson and Maxi Priest. Her interpretive skill brought new life to songs by writers such as Leonard Cohen and the Beatles. In recognition of her influential career, she received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
