Morphine was an innovative American rock band formed in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1989 by Mark Sandman, Dana Colley, and Jerome Deupree. Known for their distinctive "low rock" sound, the band blended elements of blues, jazz, and rock, using an unconventional setup of baritone saxophone, two-string bass, and drums. Mark Sandman's deep vocals and unique songwriting style defined their minimalist, groove-driven music. Despite critical acclaim and a strong international following, their commercial success in the US was limited, though they enjoyed significant recognition in countries like Belgium, Russia, Portugal, France, and Australia. Morphine released five albums before Sandman's sudden passing in 1999 brought the band to an end. The spirit of the original group continues with Vapors of Morphine, led by the surviving members.
