Midnight Oil, often called The Oils, are an influential Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1972. The classic lineup features Peter Garrett on vocals and harmonica, Rob Hirst on drums, Jim Moginie on guitar and keyboard, and Martin Rotsey on guitar. Known for their powerful sound and politically charged lyrics, the band rose from a cult following to achieve international success, especially with their 1987 album Diesel and Dust and its iconic single Beds Are Burning, which drew attention to Indigenous Australian issues.
Throughout their career, Midnight Oil released numerous acclaimed albums, including 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1, Red Sails in the Sunset, Blue Sky Mining, and their final studio album Resist in 2022.
