MC Lyte, born Lana Michele Moorer on October 11, 1970, is an influential American rapper widely recognized as a pioneer for women in hip hop. Rising to prominence in the late 1980s, she made history as the first female rapper to release a full solo album with 1988’s "Lyte as a Rock", featuring classic singles like "10% Dis" and "Paper Thin". Her follow-up album "Eyes on This" broke further ground, including the hit "Cha Cha Cha". Throughout her career, MC Lyte has delivered chart-topping singles such as "Poor Georgie", "Ruffneck", and "Keep On, Keepin’ On", the latter of which entered the Billboard Hot 100 Top Ten. She has collaborated with artists like Janet Jackson, Brandy, Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, and Beyoncé. Noted for her lyrical skill and trailblazing spirit, MC Lyte has been honored with awards including the BET Hip Hop Icon Lifetime Achievement and the VH1 Hip Hop Honors. She was named among the 50 greatest rappers by Billboard and Vibe in 2023. Beyond music, MC Lyte has acted in film and television, worked as a DJ and voiceover artist, and directed the short film "Break Up In Love". Committed to uplifting others, she founded the Hip Hop Sisters Foundation, supporting educational and empowerment initiatives.
