John J. Mellencamp, born in 1951 and formerly known as Johnny Cougar and John Cougar Mellencamp, is an influential American singer-songwriter recognized for his heartland rock style and use of traditional instrumentation. Rising to fame in the 1980s, he is known for major hits like Hurts So Good, Jack and Diane, Pink Houses, Small Town, and Cherry Bomb. Mellencamp has achieved fourteen top 20 hits in the US and holds the record for the most solo number ones on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. He has sold over 60 million albums worldwide and won a Grammy Award from 13 nominations. Mellencamp was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018. Beyond music, he helped start Farm Aid in 1985, raising significant funds and awareness for family farmers. His latest album, Orpheus Descending, came out in 2023.
