Joe Strummer, born John Graham Mellor in 1952, was a British musician best known as the co-founder, lyricist, rhythm guitarist, and lead vocalist of the Clash. Formed in 1976, the Clash became a pioneering force in punk rock, blending punk with reggae, ska, dub, funk, rap, and rockabilly. Their albums, including Give 'Em Enough Rope and London Calling, brought them both UK and US chart success, while Combat Rock achieved double platinum status in the United States. The band became known for politically charged lyrics and innovative sound, leaving a lasting impact on rock and alternative music. Beyond the Clash, Strummer played with bands such as the 101ers, the Latino Rockabilly War, the Mescaleros, and the Pogues, alongside solo projects. He also acted, composed scores, and hosted a BBC Radio show. After his death in 2002, the Joe Strummer Foundation was created to support and empower musicians worldwide. Strummer and the Clash were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
