J. S. Bach

J. S. Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) was a German composer and musician of the late Baroque period, recognized as one of the greatest figures in Western music history. Known for his exceptional mastery of counterpoint, harmony, and musical form, Bach created an extensive body of work across a wide range of genres and instruments. His most famous compositions include the orchestral Brandenburg Concertos, the solo cello suites and violin sonatas and partitas, the Goldberg Variations and The Well-Tempered Clavier for keyboard, the Toccata and Fugue in D minor for organ, and major choral works such as the St Matthew Passion and Mass in B minor. Born in Eisenach into a family of musicians, Bach was orphaned at a young age and raised by his older brother before pursuing studies and professional appointments in various German cities. He served as a court musician and later became the cantor at St Thomas's Church in Leipzig, where he composed and directed music for both church and university ensembles. Throughout his career, Bach produced hundreds of cantatas, as well as concertos, suites, motets, and sacred works, often drawing on influences from Italian and French music. Though respected as an organist during his lifetime, Bach's music gained wider recognition in the 19th century and has since become central to the classical repertoire. His works are celebrated for their depth, technical brilliance, and emotional range, continuing to inspire musicians and audiences worldwide. Several of his children, including Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christian Bach, also became notable composers.
