Green Day is an American rock band from Rodeo, California, formed in 1987 by Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt. Joined by drummer Tré Cool in 1990, the band became a key force in bringing punk rock into mainstream music. Their 1994 breakthrough album Dookie sold over 20 million copies in the US and earned them critical acclaim. Emerging from the Bay Area punk scene, Green Day began their career with early releases on Lookout Records before signing to Reprise Records. Known for energizing albums like Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning, the group achieved new popularity through their 2004 rock opera American Idiot, followed by several successful releases including 21st Century Breakdown and Revolution Radio. The band’s music inspired a Tony Award-winning Broadway adaptation and led to their 2015 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Over the years, Green Day has sold about 75 million records worldwide, won five Grammy Awards, and influenced generations of fans and musicians. Members have also been involved in side projects such as Pinhead Gunpowder and Foxboro Hot Tubs.
