Gojira

Gojira

Gojira is a French heavy metal band from Ondres, formed in 1996 by brothers Joe and Mario Duplantier, Christian Andreu, and Jean-Michel Labadie. Since changing their name from Godzilla to Gojira in 2001, the lineup has remained unchanged. Known for blending progressive and technical death metal with lyrics about spirituality, philosophy, and environmental issues, Gojira has grown from obscurity to global acclaim. Their reputation was established with early albums Terra Incognita and The Link, and strengthened by their energetic live shows. The band gained international attention with From Mars to Sirius and The Way of All Flesh, which led to their first overseas tours. Gojira’s later albums, including L’Enfant Sauvage, Magma, and Fortitude, achieved chart success in both Europe and the United States. Magma marked a shift to a more accessible sound and became their breakthrough release. Gojira is recognized as the first French band to top the Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart and has received several Grammy nominations. The band is also noted for its environmental and human rights activism. In 2024, Gojira became the first heavy metal band to perform at the Olympics opening ceremony, further cementing its status as a major force in modern metal.
