Georges Bizet

Georges Bizet

Georges Bizet, born in 1838 and passing in 1875, was a prominent French composer of the Romantic period. Celebrated above all for his opera Carmen, which became one of the most performed and beloved works in the operatic repertoire, Bizet’s life and career were cut tragically short. Despite a stellar student career at the Conservatoire de Paris and winning the esteemed Prix de Rome, he struggled to gain recognition in his lifetime, with many of his early works and operas such as Les pêcheurs de perles receiving little immediate success. Bizet also earned high praise for his skill as a pianist, though he rarely performed publicly. Much of his career involved arranging music for others, as his own compositions were largely overlooked by Parisian audiences. After serving in the National Guard during the Franco-Prussian War, he enjoyed some public attention for the orchestral suite drawn from his incidental music to L'Arlésienne. His landmark opera Carmen, initially met with controversy and thought a failure, achieved immense popularity only after his death. Bizet's personal life included a sometimes turbulent marriage and one son. While most of his works were neglected for decades, his reputation has steadily grown, and he is now regarded as an innovative and influential figure whose early death was a major loss to French music.
