Game Theory was an American power pop band formed in 1982 by songwriter Scott Miller. Blending melodic jangle pop with experimental production and literate lyrics, their music earned praise for its psychedelic-tinged sound and inventive songwriting. Known for catchy hooks layered with complexity, the group drew critical attention for Miller’s highly personal lyrics, rich in literary and pop culture references. Game Theory released five studio albums and two EPs between 1982 and 1990, cultivating a lasting influence on indie rock. Though the lineup changed frequently, Miller remained the driving force throughout the band’s run. Their catalog was remastered and reissued starting in 2014, and a final album, Supercalifragile, was released after Miller’s passing in 2017.
