Daniel Balavoine (1952–1986) was a prominent French singer and songwriter known for his powerful voice and emotional lyrics. Rising to fame in the early 1980s, he influenced a generation of artists such as Jean-Jacques Goldman and his close friend Michel Berger, and his music even reached the Japanese rock scene via Crystal King. Balavoine starred in the original cast of the rock opera Starmania in 1978. Beyond music, he was involved in motorsports and made headlines for his outspoken political views, notably in a televised debate with François Mitterrand. His songs often explored themes of pain and despair, but also conveyed hope and rebellion.
