Crass

Crass

Crass was an influential English art collective and punk band formed in 1977 in Epping, Essex. Known for their radical politics, they pioneered the anarcho-punk movement by promoting anarchism as both a political stance and a way of life. Their work stood out for its activist spirit, encompassing direct action, animal rights, feminism, anti-fascism, and environmentalism. Embracing a do-it-yourself approach, Crass produced their own music, art, and films, and spread provocative messages through graffiti and leaflets across London. Their bold aesthetic included black military-style clothing and confrontational iconography, challenging symbols of authority. Critical not only of mainstream culture but also the punk scene itself, Crass left a lasting impact through their experimental sound, visual art, and commitment to social change.
