Nina Hagen is a German singer, songwriter, and actress celebrated for her dramatic vocal style and her influential role in the punk and Neue Deutsche Welle movements of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Often called "The Godmother of German Punk," she grew up in East Berlin and began her career acting alongside her mother, Eva-Maria Hagen. After early success with the band Automobil and the popular single Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen, she moved to West Germany and formed the Nina Hagen Band, which gained critical acclaim with its debut album in 1978.
Hagen launched a successful solo career in the 1980s, making an international impact particularly with her album NunSexMonkRock. Throughout her career, she released a number of albums spanning different genres, and her theatrical stage presence, distinct voice, and eclectic style have made her a standout figure in music. Besides music, she is known for her work as a voice-over actress, her autobiographical books, and her activism for human and animal rights.
