The Meters, later known as The Funky Meters, are a renowned funk band from New Orleans, formed in 1965 by Zigaboo Modeliste, George Porter Jr., Leo Nocentelli, and Art Neville. Recognized as pioneers of funk, they are known for their signature blend of tight grooves and New Orleans rhythms. Their influential tracks "Cissy Strut" and "Look-Ka Py Py" are considered classics of the genre. Beyond their own recordings, The Meters contributed as backing musicians for artists like Dr John and Allen Toussaint. Though they saw limited mainstream fame, their impact on funk and popular music is lasting. The group has been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame multiple times and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
