Roy Ayers (1940–2025) was an influential American vibraphonist, composer, and producer known for shaping the jazz-funk and acid jazz genres. He launched his career in post-bop jazz with several albums on Atlantic Records before becoming a pioneer of jazz-funk at Polydor Records in the 1970s. Often called the Godfather of Neo Soul, Ayers is celebrated for his timeless tracks "Everybody Loves the Sunshine," "Running Away," and "Freaky Deaky." His innovative sound made him one of the most sampled artists in hip-hop history.
