Pavement is an indie rock band from Stockton, California, formed in 1989. Their lineup featured Stephen Malkmus, Scott Kannberg, Mark Ibold, Steve West, and Bob Nastanovich. Originally a studio project, they gained underground acclaim with their early releases before evolving into a full band known for their witty lyrics and distinctive sound. Active throughout the 1990s, Pavement released five albums and became highly influential in the indie rock scene, despite only briefly breaking into the mainstream with the song Cut Your Hair. The band never signed to a major label, instead staying with respected independents like Matador and Flying Nun. Pavement disbanded in 1999 but reunited for tours in 2010 and 2022 to 2024. Widely regarded by critics as one of the defining American indie bands of their era, Pavement has built a lasting cult following.
