Mark Knopfler is a British musician and songwriter best known as the lead guitarist, singer, and main songwriter for Dire Straits, the acclaimed rock band he co-founded with his brother in 1977. During the band’s run until 1995, Knopfler’s distinctive fingerstyle guitar work and songwriting helped drive Dire Straits to worldwide success, highlighted by multi-platinum albums like Brothers in Arms. Following the group’s split, Knopfler launched a successful solo career and has released ten solo albums, while also composing film scores for movies such as Local Hero and The Princess Bride. Renowned as a guitar virtuoso and ranked among Rolling Stone’s greatest guitarists, Knopfler has earned multiple Grammy Awards and other major honors. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Dire Straits in 2018.
