Ibanez RGA42EX-BAM — A Modern Superstrat with Wizard III Speed

Ibanez RGA42EX-BAM is a superstrat-style solidbody electric guitar built for players who want the speed of an RG with a slimmer, more contoured body. Its fast Wizard III maple neck and meranti body deliver the effortless playability this manufacturer is known for at a price that suits working musicians. The arched-top RGA shape sits between a standard RG and an S-Series, making it lighter on the shoulder during long sets. Finished in Black Aurora Burst Matte, this model keeps the focus firmly on performance.

What Sets the RGA42EX Apart

The RGA42EX stands out from typical RG models thanks to its thinner arched-top body, which is more contoured than a standard RG and noticeably lighter on a strap. Quantum humbuckers deliver a quick low-end response with precise note definition for fast staccato passages, while the F106 fixed bridge keeps tuning stable through aggressive playing and dropped tunings. Together, these elements make this instrument a flexible workhorse for rock, metal, and blues players who want speed without sacrificing tonal range.

Wizard III Neck — Speed and Comfort for Lead Players

The Wizard III maple neck is one of the brand's thinnest profiles, designed for minimal hand fatigue during fast runs. With a 400 mm fingerboard radius and 24 jumbo frets, the neck offers a flat, fast surface that supports wide bends and two-octave lead lines.

• Scale Length: 648 mm — standard feel for tight low-end response and familiar string tension.
• Neck Profile: Wizard III maple, 19 mm at 1st fret / 21 mm at 12th fret — slim C-shape that suits fast alternate picking and legato.
• Fingerboard Radius: 400 mm — flat enough for low-action lead playing and easy string bending.
• Jatoba fretboard with off-set white dot inlays adds a crisp high-end response to the overall tonal character.

Meranti Body — Lightweight, Ergonomic, and Tonally Balanced

The meranti body is lighter than a typical basswood or mahogany RG body, reducing shoulder fatigue during long gigs and practice sessions. Its arched-top design with deeper contours improves upper-fret access, while the satin polyurethane finish keeps the look understated and stage-ready.

• Body Material: Meranti — scooped mid-range character that pairs well with high-output humbuckers.
• Body Shape: RGA arched-top, double cutaway — thinner than a standard RG with aggressive forearm and belly contours.
• Finish: Satin Polyurethane, Black Aurora Burst Matte (BAM) — low-glare finish that feels fast under the picking hand.

Quantum Pickups and F106 Bridge — Tonal Range and Tuning Stability

The Quantum HH configuration gives the RGA42EX a wide tonal range, from thick humbucker-driven metal to glassy split-coil cleans via the 5-way selector. The F106 fixed bridge anchors the strings firmly, eliminating tuning drift during heavy riffing and alternate dropped tunings.

• Pickup Configuration: HH — Quantum (H) neck and bridge, passive ceramic — quick low-end response with full-bodied midrange and crisp highs.
• Switching: 5-way pickup selector with parallel and split-coil options — expands tonal range beyond a standard 3-way setup.
• Bridge: F106 fixed bridge with individual saddle adjustment — rock-solid tuning stability and easy intonation setup.
• Factory-installed D'Addario EXL110 strings (.010–.046 gauge) allow for immediate playing right out of the box.

Who Should Play This Guitar

This is the right choice for rock and metal players who want a fast, lightweight superstrat with the tonal flexibility to cover blues and clean work. Intermediate players upgrading from a beginner Strat or Les Paul copy will appreciate the slim Wizard III neck and the forgiving meranti body, while experienced players get a reliable backup or modding platform. The 5-way switching and Quantum humbuckers handle high-gain rhythm, articulate lead lines, and cleaner rhythm tones with the volume rolled back. For gigging musicians who need tuning stability for dropped tunings, the F106 fixed bridge removes the hassle of a floating vibrato.
