Gary Numan, born Gary Anthony James Webb in 1958, is an influential English singer, songwriter, and musician best known for pioneering electronic music. He began his career as the frontman of Tubeway Army before launching a successful solo run with the chart-topping album The Pleasure Principle in 1979. Numan rose to fame in the late seventies and early eighties with iconic hits like Are Friends Electric and Cars, both reaching number one in the UK. Known for his distinctive synthesizer-driven sound and futuristic persona, Numan has sold over ten million records and continues to inspire a devoted following. He received the Ivor Novello Inspiration Award in 2017 and made his Glastonbury Festival debut in June 2025.
