Bon Iver is an American indie folk band formed in 2006 by Justin Vernon in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Originally a solo project, the group expanded to include members Sean Carey, Michael Lewis, Matthew McCaughan, Andrew Fitzpatrick, and Jenn Wasner. Their debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago, was recorded by Vernon in isolation in a Wisconsin cabin and gained widespread recognition upon its 2007 release. Bon Iver’s self-titled second album won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 2012. Known for their experimental and evolving sound, the band received critical acclaim for 22, A Million in 2016 and a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year for I, I in 2019. Their latest album, Sable, Fable, arrived in 2025. The name Bon Iver is inspired by the French phrase for good winter.
