The electronic tachometer works by counting the pulses generated by the ignition system, the alternator, the generator tachometer, or the magnetic encoder sender. Selecting the correct tachometer and setting the switch on the rear to the correct position, the tachometer knows how many pulses it sends at each engine speed.
